Inaugural Benchrest Shoot for SSAA Broken Hill
7 January 2007

Sunday, January 7, 2007, saw the inaugural shoot at the newly established range at the SSAA Broken Hill Branch. The 50m rimfire event attracted 12 shooters and required two details to complete the 40-shot match. The day’s southerly winds presented comfortable conditions and few surprises for these seasoned Broken Hill shooters. The scores were close, with the top three shooters who all dropped one point each separated by ‘V’ bulls only. At this rate, the next round is sure to produce some 400s, followed by the inevitable challenge of even smaller targets.

Results from the inaugural shoot were:

Nearly $8000 has been spent on this newly established range. It is located at the Broken Hill Pistol Club’s 200m range and is available to all SSAA members. The range now has wheelchair access, eight new Benchrest tables and target distances of 50, 100, 150 and 200m. It now also has a fully concreted undercover shooting area.

The local branch boasts a membership of more than 100 members. Benchrest shoots will be conducted on the first and last Sunday of every month for both rimfire and centrefire rifles. Members are encouraged come out and try the new facilities where rimfire events are held on the first Sunday of each month and centrefire on the last Sunday.

The range improvements were made possible by a grant from the SSAA NSW Branch. A spokesperson from the local club wished to thank everyone who has helped out during the months of work at the range. Special thanks go to Daryl Gray, Peter Gurney, Richard Harvey, Ray Fryer, John Palmer, Jon Palmer, Paul Smith, Don Betar, Keith Russell and Rex Carroll in particular.
