The Junior Interstate Challenge had its origins around six years ago, arising from talks between parents, supporters and juniors participating in the National Junior Coaching Camp that was then held annually at the Captains Mountain Complex in Millmerran, Queensland during the Easter school holidays.

The camaraderie forged at the junior camp, together with a desire to continue and strengthen the friendships formed, was a strong motivator for parents, supporters and juniors to have a shoulder-to-shoulder competition, where the juniors could demonstrate their new skills in shooting.

Naturally, a committee was formed by the parents from all states and the first event was held in Canberra with a good roll up of juniors, parents and supporters. The event held over two days was for Rimfire Field Rifle and Rifle Silhouette. SSAA ACT (Majura) hosted the event again for the next two years, then SSAA Queensland (Belmont), SSAA NSW (Batemans Bay) and SSAA Victoria (Springvale) all played host to the Junior Interstate Challenge.

In 2007, the final Interstate Junior Challenge was held at the SSAA ACT (Majura) range. Families drove or flew from all over the country to take part. There was camping and bunk bedding, barbecuing and picnicking, eating fabulous egg and bacon rolls for breakfast at the ranges and making friends all around. State ‘teams’ were made up of anyone who wanted to go and could convince parents to help them get there.

This year, the event is transforming into a National three-day, shoulder-to-shoulder Junior Championship, with national medals to be awarded to the top-placed juniors and coaching in the three disciplines of Rimfire Field Rifle, Rifle Silhouette and for the first time a 3-Positional event.
