Letter: Guns back on agenda

Daily Mercury, Page: 41 Thursday, 3 May 2012

General and complete disarmament is coming to Queensland. It matters little which party is in power.
The recent "gang’ shootings on the Gold Coast has nudged the Newman administration to race new gun laws into Parliament.
It seems that the thinking of the political elite is that if you have mandatory sentences for the possession of "illegal’ guns then "gang’ shootings will stop An amnesty for unregistered guns is also on the agenda.
Since when do criminals take notice of the law? They will not hand in their "illegal" guns nor will they be concerned about mandatory sentences.
When criminals commit offences the last thing on their mind is getting caught.
It is obvious that the Government is using the latest shooting outrages to implement more gun controls and get more guns Out of the hands of honest law-abiding citizens.
Heaven only knows what they would come up with if there was a massacre like the 1996 Tasmanian incident. That would be a heaven-sent excuse to ban all guns held by private individuals which is the ultimate goal of the gun haters.
We haven’t heard the last word on gun control.
