Feral pig management making a difference
ABC Western Queensland, Longreach Rural Report: 18 Jan 2012 06:22AM
Sutherland plays an interview with Neil Judd, the CEO of Southwest Natural Resource Management, about a feral pig management program in South West Queensland which is showing some promising results. The Federal Government designated the Bulloo Lakes as a High Ecological Value Aquatic Ecosystem, but feral pigs have been wreaking havoc on the area. Judd says the two shooting programs last year have helped protect the vital ecosystem. Judd states his organisation has been working with Gibson Partners, who own Bulloo Downs, to come up with a program that fits in with their operation. So far they have cleared over 4000 pigs, which helps reduce the risk to nesting sites. The pigs re-invade sites, so Judd is hoping to build support for a long term program. Currently Southwest Natural Resource Management receives $40,000 from the Australian Government's Caring for our Country program and Gibson Partners have also contributed their own money. He says they have had 'wonderful support' from the Federal, State and local Governments, but more funding would allow them to continue long term and control feral cats, dogs, foxes and weeds.
