Letter: Responsible gun ownership

Herald Sun, Page: 23 Monday, 16 January 2012

I am writing to express my gratitude for the article "Shot down by dodgy logic" (Herald Sun, January 13).
For too long have I read pages of dribble, labelling me a licensed and law-abiding firearms owner a criminal.
Thank you to Andrew Rule for his article and the message it brings. I fill out the necessary paperwork for the police, my local GP deemed me fit to hold a firearms licence.
Not only do I apply to purchase and register my firearms, but I submit to the safe storage regulations also. I do this because I am not a criminal.
New Zealand seems to be getting along well, and the gun owners over there are still allowed to own the firearms the free world’s forefathers battled dictators with.
I’m sorry, but if the average police officer over there is not issued a firearm yet the firearms owners are allowed to own firearms currently prohibited here in Australia; a nation that arms its police force to the teeth to better protect its citizens I’m sure you get my point. Something just does not seem right about that.
