Letter: Shooters control pest animals

The reason for holding multiple firearms in country areas is easily explained.
The Department of Primary Industries stipulates the use ol minimum legal calibres, for instance in deer shooting.
There is also an ethical reason for the shooter to use a calibre of ammunition ta humanely dispatch even feral animals such as rabbits, foxes and pigs.
Whereas a .22 is fine to shoot rabbits, a much heavier calibre such as .308 is needed for a feral pig. Therefore there is a need to hold several types of firearms and use the appropriate calibre to dispatch the pest animal as humanely as possible.
Farmers and sporting shooters do a great service to this country by controlling feral animals that, after good rains, are breeding at an alarming rate. These animals destroy the habitats of native Australian animals and birdlife, especially in wetlands.
Keep up the good work, shooters.
