Firearm owner dismisses Herald Sun figures

3AW, Melbourne Mornings: 09 Jan 2012 09:32AM

Interview with Russell Foster, Gun Owner/Primary Producer, Swifts Creek. He says the Herald Sun reports that guns outnumber people in 24 Victorian towns but they are registered guns owned by licence shooters. He says the problem in crime is unregistered guns used by criminals. He says it is wrong to equate an increase in registered gun ownership to robberies using firearms. He says of the 200 guns seized by police from criminals, 75% had never been registered. He says Swift's Creek is the state capital of gun ownership with 774 registered firearms for just 278 residents. Foster says he owns 10 guns between he and his partner. He says last year they lost 350 sheep to wild dogs, costing them $60,000 in income. He says the figures are a misconception because he knows of two firearms collectors in Swifts Creek. He says there is no gun crime in the town. He says he realises guns are taboo in Melbourne but they must have them. He says he thinks the town is being portrayed wrongly.
