Grant for pest control along River Murray
ABC Riverland SA, Renmark. Rural Report, 09 Dec 2009 06:46AM
Compere Natalie Oliveri reports that $217,000 has been granted for pest control along the River Murray over the next 12 months. The South Australian Murray Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Board has made an application to the South Australian National Resources Management Community Grants Program in order to eradicate feral goats, pigs, deer and rabbits. The board’s operations manager, Peter Michelmore, says $86,000 has been set aside for dealing with feral pigs, in collaboration with Victorian state authorities. Another $50,000 will be put towards trapping feral deer and goats in the Brown’s Well area and the final $80,000 will be spent on existing rabbit eradication programs. Michelmore explains that the funding is for a three-year program and hopes that more funding will be available for the following two years as well. He mentions the assistance provided and importance of local landowners in dealing with pest control problems. Lew Westbrook, chairman, Brown’s Well Landcare Group, says he is happy to hear that money has been granted to help farmers deal with feral goats near Paruna. He hopes to eradicate the feral goat problem in South Australia by dealing with them in Victoria’s Murray-Sunset National Park.
