Feral animals multiplying in New South Wales

2UE, Sydney. Drive, 09 Dec 2009 04:41PM

Compere Murray Wilton says following on from reports of an outbreak of rats on the lower north shore and brush turkeys in the Hornsby area, there is now a reported cat plague in Parramatta, with as many as 100 animals living behind a set of shops in Benaud Place at Telopea. He interviews Michael McDermott, Parramatta councillor, who says that he is concerned about reports of this cat plague, where undesexed former domesticated cats are now multiplying ‘exponentially’. He says this is a Housing Commission and public health issue, but Parramatta Council has appointed an animal management officer. He says that basic maintenance work is needed to seal areas under the Housing Commission block where these cats are currently frequenting. The compere recalls a story about the night-time clearing of feral cats and rabbits from Sydney’s Centennial Park by a licensed shooter. He says there are separate claims of foxes being sighting on Sydney’s outskirts.
