Hot-shot Hamish

Hamish Tait is a hot shot when it comes to playing the piano. The 34-year-old is also no slouch when he has a target in front of him at the Big Springs Rifle Range.
Hamish, who is the director of the Riverina Conservatorium of Music, has made an impact since joining the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia’s Wagga branch a year ago. Despite spending 15 years away from the sport, Hamish has managed to cement himself in the top four of the overall point score.
“I grew up on a property on south-east Queensland and I was lucky enough to attend a school, which had target shooting for sport,” Hamish said.
“But after I left school, it did not enter the sphere of activities I might do.
“Twelve months ago, I decided to give it another go and now I am having a ball.”
Hamish is hoping to take part in SSAA Wagga’s Charity Shoot on Sunday, Deecember 6.
Everyone over the age of 12 is welcome to attend and no licence is required.
“Target shooting is a self-competitive sport you are always trying to better yourself and it’s also a wonderful way to learn how to handle firearms responsibly,” Hamish said.
“The Charity Shoot is a top opportunity for people to see how much fun it is.
“And the great thing is it’s a recreational sport for all ages...at one end of the bench you can have a 13-year-old just starting out and at the other end could be a 78-year-old, who has been doing it for 50 years.”
The Charity Shoot will start at 10am at the rifle range adjacent to Livingstone State Forest on Wrigley’s Road via O’Brien’s Creek Road off Mangoplah Road, south of Wagga.
Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for juniors, with sausage sandwiches and drinks available for a gold coin donation and all proceeds aiding the Riding for the Disabled.
