Shooting for the best

Gympie Life, Page 20. Saturday, 21 November 2009

As usual, all of our disciplines have been travelling very well over the last couple of months and we have had the privilege of welcoming many shooters from other clubs to our regular shoots.
A lot of our members have also spent time at other ranges for competitions while others have enjoyed taking time out for hunting.
Sam Taylor, one of our junior shooters (aged 16), was recently presented with a Proficiency Badge from Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (SSAA) National for Rimfire Field Rifle. This recognition was for scoring over 300 out of a possible 400 not a very easy thing to do and something that some of we older shooters would really like to be able to emulate.
In August, Sam travelled with his Dad to the Fraser Coast Range at Maryborough to compete in the Queensland State Field Rifle Championships and won the silver medal with a very creditable score of 318.
All members of SSAA TCB would like to congratulate Sam on such a great achievement after having been shooting for less than three years.
The dedication and commitment to all aspects of safety, and the deportment that all of our juniors present is extremely important for the future of sports shooting. We are obviously very proud of their achievements whether at club, state or national level.
Young people from the age of ii years are welcome to try their hand at sports shooting. They will be coached in all aspects of firearm handling and safety by competent and capable senior shooters. We recommend that juniors begin with .22 rifle and club rifles are available for their use.
Ours is not a very expensive sport for youngsters, and everyone who joins is encouraged to enjoy what we do while learning the safety and discipline necessary. The only requirement for young folk is photo ID and parental consent. We do encourage parents to be present for the duration of the shoot it normally takes from 23 hours to complete and, by the end of the first session, most parents are quite amazed with the aptitude and enthusiasm that their youngsters take home with them.
We are now getting organised for a fun’ Christmas shoot on Sunday December 13 when rifle, shotgun and pistol enthusiasts will enjoy an early Christmas lunch get-together.
Access to our range is by appointment only but calendars are available stating dates of regular competitions for Rimfire Rifle, Rimfire/Centrefire Pistol, Shotgun, Blackpowder, Single Action and Archery. Contact numbers are: Gordon MacRae 5486 5208 Ted Rogers 5486 4135 Ian Ladewig 5488 0474 Len Vickery 5488 0184 Gordon Rigby (Shotgun) 5482 1285 Lois Archer 5486 2559 Niall West (Archery) 5488 0731 We would like to take this opportunity to wish each and all a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and safe 2010.
