WA firearm licence applications

Halls Creek Herald, Page 6. Tuesday, 17 November 2009

WA Police has announced a new partner-ship with Australia Post that will enable firearms licence applications and payments to be made at Australia Post outlets. From last Thursday 12 November 2009, applications for new and additional firearm licences will only be accepted at Australia Post outlets, providing greater public access with 330 participating outlets in Western Australia.
Previous to this new partnership, WA Police received all applications and payments for firearms licences at the 155 police stations across the State.
Detective Inspector Dale Bell from the Licensing Enforcement Division said: “The overall changes will see better access and less inconvenience for people seeking licences, balanced by tighter controls and more rigor to the integrity checking of applicants.
“This is a partnership that improves the customer experience without compromising community safety.
“Australia Post’s expertise on counter services and identity verification will be used to collect applications and forward them to WA Police which continue to maintain its role in deciding who will be granted a firearm licence”.
Additional partnerships with firearms dealers and associations focusing on firearms serviceability and firearms awareness will see improvements in firearms licensing that will benefit both the firearms community and the broader community.
Application forms will be available online via the WA Police website at www.police.wa.gov.au. WA Police will still assess the suitability of applicants and issue firearm licences where appropriate.
These changes will be accompanied by internal business changes, the use of modernised smart forms, streamlined licensing systems and improved integrity checks. Licensing will be centralised to a specialist team within the Licensing Enforcement Division with expert knowledge in firearms licensing.
