Albany shooter Steve Hurley joined an elite group after smashing his rivals arid setting a new Australian three-gun record at the 2009 Australian Lever Action Rifie Championships in Canberra earlier this month.
Hurley became only the second West Australian, the other being Albany’s Danny Mitchell in 1979, and sixth overall to be entered in the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia Lever Action Hall of Fame after he was crowned Australian Three-Gun Lever Action Grand Champion for the second year running.
“It’s always been my goal to be a member of the hall of fame,” Hurley said. “My biggest hurdle to overcome has been my own sell’ belief, but now I’ve done it,” he said.
“Mitchell was a great mentor. He told me when I was 16 if I put my mind to it I could be a national champion one day.” Hurley won the Australian centre fire and classic calibre championships and went agonisingly close to a clean sweep, finishing second on a countback in the Australian rimfire championship.
Hurley dominated the three-gun aggregate, leaving fellow WA shooter Kim Knapp in his wake by a whopping 74 points.
His score of 1224 out of a possible 1350 points surpassed the old record of 1219 set by SA~s Dave McCarthy in 2006.
“Experience played a big role. I am a lot tougher than I was in my 20s and it showed,” he said.
The Albany Lever Action Rifle Club member also picked up two gold medals in the 2009 international postal shoot. Hurley won individual gold and was part of a five-man Albany outfit which won the team shoot.
