Letter - Hunters are humans, too

Australian, Page: 15. Monday, 19 October 2009

Sue Taylor (“Hunters should he targeted”, Soapbox, 16/10) obviously has a strong opinion against hunters, hut unfortunately it isn’t based on fads.
She thinks hunters are “rednecks with guns”, “brimful of testosterone and alcohol”, who “get their jollies ... killing innocent creatures”. Are there any negative stereotypes she has missed? The facts are different.
Hunting is a legitimate activity that our species has engaged in for hundreds of thousands of years.
Hunting with modern firearms usually leads to a quick death for the animal. Far better than the lingering death, from hunger or disease, or being eaten by other animals, possibly while still alive, that is the natural fate of wild animals.
Hunting is also beneficial for conservation.
The habitat for wallabies in areas of the Flinders Ranges has been much improved by culling of feral animals such as goats, organised by the Sporting Shooters Association, at the private shooter’s own expense.
Hunters wield political influence because the fads are on their side, Sue.
