Shooting conditions proved difficult for shooters last weekend at the Queensland Rimfire Benchrest State Championships.
Held over two days at the Springsure Sporting Shooters Association of Australia club, conditions were trying for the rimfires, especially in the factory and light classes which are limited to six power scopes.
“Mirage and changeable gusty winds proved difficult for shooters to keep groupings together in these classes on Saturday,” said a Springsure SSAA club spokesperson.
Conditions were similar on Sunday, however the heavy class rimfires with unlimited scopes were able to cope better with the conditions and some smaller groupings were recorded.
“Five Juniors took part in the two-day shoot and acquitted themselves extremely well as it was their first Benchrest competition for some of them,” the spokesperson said.
Springsure juniors had good results with Hannah Marshall winning the smallest group of .614 at 100 yards and placing second in the light rimfire class, while sister Rachel, competing in her first registered match, put down the second smallest group of .189 in the 50 metres heavy rimfire.
The other Springsure shooter, Damien Sandilands, came third behind the Marshall sisters with a score of 2.1265 in the light rimfire and 1.3223 in the heavy rimfire.
Blackwater juniors Mitchell and Belinda Knight took out first and second respectively in factory rimfire with Mitchell scoring 1.9581 and Belinda a 2.4900.
“These were excellent results for all the juniors considering the difficulty of the conditions,” the club spokesperson said.
SSAA State Championship medals and Top Ten patches were presented after completion of competition each day Around 40 nominations were accepted with shooters travelling from Brisbane, Cairns, Innisfail, Toowoomba, Roma, Gladstone Rockhampton and Mackay, as well as Blackwater and Springsure.
