Newsreader: The National Shooters’ Group has accused Hilltop residents of overstating the effect of the Southern Highlands Regional Shooting Range. The complex was recently approved by the State Government and has planned for a site on conservation land just outside the village. The Sporting Shooter’s Association spokesman, Tim Bannister, says most people don’t understand what the sport is all about, or for that matter, just exactly how it operates.
Tim Bannister: Yes, I think there have been some fairly sensational claims about what this will do. One resident was saying the roads are too bad to drive on. Well, my answer to that was fix the roads. Our firearms range is exactly that. It’s where someone sights in their firearm and slowly and carefully takes their shots. It’s not some kind of Rambo-style shooting range with machine-guns. It’s actually probably quieter than a school basketball court.
