Feral cats impacting New Holland mice populations

ABC 936 Hobart. Breakfast. 22 Sep 2009 07:23AM

Billie Lazenby, a scientific officer and PhD student with DPWE, says there are concerns that feral cats are eating New Holland mice. Lazenby says there are very few studies to quantify the impact that feral cats have on the native wildlife. Lazenby says feral cats have been eradicated from Macquarie Island. Lazenby talks about her recent work on the Tasman Peninsula and the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program. Lazenby says the decline in Tasmanian devil numbers may have contributed to an increase in feral cat numbers. Lazenby says it is unlikely that feral cats could be eradicated from main lands. Lazenby discusses the methods of controlling feral cat populations.
