Bob Irwin discusses wombat rescue centre

ABC 666 Canberra. Morning. 14 Sep 2009 09:32AM

Bob Irwin, founder of Australia Zoo and father of Steve Irwin is in Canberra today’s to push for the establishment of a wombat rescue and research centre with Opposition figures such as leader Malcolm Turnbull. Sloan believes no Government officials have agreed to meet with Irwin. Irwin explains the seriousness of the issue, which he adds is impacting Australian wildlife in general. He states the SA Government has structural permits for wombats if farmers require them, which he feels has to be addressed. He comments it is unnecessary to ‘destroy our wildlife,’ accusing Australia of losing its ability to live with its animals. Sloan adds the Limestone Plains Group has claims the wombats would starve if not culled. Irwin feels an offer to remove the kangaroos from Queensland for $600,000 was ignored. He calls for the establishment of a group or committee to address the situation. Irwin clarifies he did not make the meeting request with Federal Agricultural Minister Tony Burke or Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett, but was invited by the Opposition.
