Study to learn more about our red deer

Toowoomba Chronicle, Page 8. Friday, 11 September 2009

A greater understanding of wild red deer and their environmental impact will be the outcome of a collaborative research project involving Toowoomba Regional Council.
The project, to research the ecology of Queensland’s red deer and their value as a game species, was launched at Lake Cressbrook on Saturday.
A considerable number of wild red deer can be found in the north-eastern parts of the Toowoomba region near Cressbrook and Perseverance dams.
Council is collaborating with the University of Qld, Biosecurity Qld, the Qld Environmental Protection Agency, the Australian Red Deer Association (ADA Qld), Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia (SSAA Qld) and Toowoomba Pipeline Alliance in the project.
Environmental and Community Services portfolio leader Cr Bill Cahill said the information gained would be useful in managing deer as a resource or a pest, or both.
Two PhD studies will be undertaken on TRC property in the catchments of the dams.
