Shooting to the top

Bridgetown’s Paul Jones - no stranger to high-level martial arts competition - has added a further trophy to his vast collection, for pistol shooting. Against strong competition, he won the senior section of the Swanbourne Services Shooting Club’s Invitational Pistol Shooting Competition at the SAS Campbell Barracks, Swanbourne on August 23, 2009.
This event is very unusual, he said.
As well as being challenging and exciting, its emphasis is on a military theme.
Jones has been a competitive shooter since 1996 in both the International Practical Shooting Confederation and the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia.
He regularly achieves major placings at state and national individual and team events.
A member of the Bunbury Sporting Shooter’s Club, Jones said that practical shooting was different to other styles of competitive shooting.
“It requires strategic planning prior to moving rapidly through a course of targets,” he said.
A shooter’s ability is scored on a combination of speed and accuracy.
“This sport has no age or gender barriers,” he said. “It just requires accuracy, discipline and a responsible attitude, with fitness an added bonus.
“My future aims are to further the sport of competition shooting into the future.”
