Hendra virus concerns
ABC Far North Cairns. Drive. 03 Sep 2009 04:07PM
Compere Craig Zonca says the latest outbreak of the Hendra virus had prompted calls for bat culls by the Opposition. Tim Mulherin, Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries Queensland, says the Government is not putting bats before humans; however, bats can’t just be exterminated. Mulherin says Biosecurity Queensland is working with the Equine Veterinary Association to develop guidelines for the virus. Mulherin says Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Ron Glanville thinks people need to be more aware of dealing with the virus. Mulherin says a vaccine will probably be a decade away and they will continue research with the Australian Animal Health Authority and CSIRO. Mulherin says they are trialling new technologies; however, flying foxes will return or relocate and is the responsibility of the Department of Environment and Resource Management.
