New club’s first shoot

The recently formed Glen Innes Branch of the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia conducted its first shoot at the Emmaville Rifle Range on Sunday.
Eleven members contested a variety of events while another member took advantage of the occasion to gain some practice. Despite the torrid wind conditions there were some outstanding performances.
The best five round group in the rimfire light rifle discipline, shot over 50 metres, was Peter Nimmett with 16.2mm. He was closely followed by son Luke with 19.44mm. Third was Peter Martin with 20.72. The heavy rimfire rifle event saw Lindsay Ross with a 8.65mm group with Evan Brown second with 12.20mm and Darryl Blomfield third with 12.99mm.
The rimfire light rifle scoring rounds saw Peter Nimmett again fill first place with 99.1 points from Peter Martin 97.1 and Ian McBain 95.1. Rimfire heavy rifle scoring rounds saw some excellent shooting which resulted in a four way tie between Darryl Biomfield, Garry Meehan, Lindsay Ross and Evan Brown , each with 100.4 points with honours going to Brown and Ross on a countback. John Griffey was second with 100.3 points.
Centrefire events were shot over 100 and 200 metres. The light rifle group at 100 metres was a first for Phil Archer at 6 1.99mm. Peter Nimmet second with 73.39mm and FredKeeian third with 88.82.
The light rifle discipline saw father and son Peter and Luke Nimmett tie with 44 points at 100 metres with Fred Keelan second on 41 points. The heavy rifle group at 100 metres saw Evan Brown with 11.57mm. John Griffey with 13.31 and Darryl Blomfield with 2 1.99mm discipline resulted in a win for Evan Brown at 100 metres with 50 points with Darryl Blomfield and John Griffey in tie for second with 47 points. Garry Meehan was third with 46.
The heavy rifle 200 metre shoot was a repeat with Evan Brown on 50 and Darryl Blomfield and John Griffey each with 49.
The day concluded with a service rifle event shot over 300, 200 and 100 metres. All five competitors shot Lee Enfield type .303 which made for an interesting display. First was Evan Brown with 125.1, followed by Lindsay Ross 92.0 and Ian McBain 87.4.
SSAA Glen Innes branch meets at the Glen Innes Services Club at 7.30pm on the first Thursday of each month and shoots at Emmaville Rifle Range on the fourth Sunday of each month.
