A project to research the ecology of Queensland’s red deer and their value as a game species, has been launched at Lake Cressbrook.
A considerable number of wild red deer can be found in the north-eastern parts of the Toowoomba region near Cressbrook and Perseverance Dams.
The council is collaborating with the University of Queensland, Biosecurity Queensland, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Australian Red Deer Association, Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia and Toowoomba Pipeline Alliance in the project.
Environmental and community services portfolio leader Cr Bill Cahill said the information gained would be useful in managing deer as a resource or a pest, or both.
“The results of this research project will be very useful in quantifying the costs and benefits of wild deer in Australia. Although red deer have existed in Queensland for nearly 140 years, there is no information on their impacts on native vegetation,” he said.
