Western Sydney University questions usefulness of dingo fence

Compere Andrew Moore says Australia’s dingo fence, which stretches from Queensland to South Australia, protects cattle and sheep properties from dingoes. But there are suggestions of allowing dingoes to roam more widely to wipe out feral cats and foxes. Moore says Brad Purcell, University of Western Sydney, feels the dingo fence might have outlived its usefulness. Purcell says the fence can be pulled down, as long as there are good management strategies in place. He says there has been a suppression of middle order predators, with feral cats and foxes able to predate on animals like bandicoots and bilbies, which the dingoes do not predate so much. Purcell says the purity debate about wild dingoes and the extent of their interbreeding with domestic dogs is just an excuse to kill more wild dingoes.
