ABC Central Australia (Alice Springs), NT Country Hour, 02/07/2009 12:49pm
Interview with Federal Minister for the Environment, Peter Garrett, who speaks of a portion of the Fed Govt’s $400 million Caring for Our Country funding going towards controlling feral camels in the Territory. Peter Garrett says $19 million is going towards the problem, and now is the time to invest such an amount as the problem has been escalating. Garrett says the money will greatly aid the local governments, communities and research institutions to focus on the camel issue. Garrett notes feral camels are clearly destroying some native plants, animals and deteriorating Aboriginal cultural grounds. Garrett adds the Desert Knowledge Cooperative Research Centre along with the Northern Territory, Queensland and South Australian State Government will all play key roles in this project. Garrett claims $2 million dollars over two years will also be put to cane toad control through improvements to national cane toad plan research projects. Garrett says regional NRM bodies in the Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales will be involved in 2000 community volunteer days of cane toad control.
