Teen sport shooting sensation Tim Sherrington has a chance to measure his progress this weekend.
At only 15, Sherrington has already qualified for the State Championships this weekend in Bowen.
Having been shooting competitively for five years, he uses a range of weapons, from rifles to shotguns.
“I use pretty much into anything except for pistols,” he said.
Recently he competed in Sporting Shooters Association event at Ravenswood, where he competed in eight events, taking home five first and three second placings.
Sherrington said it was not about mind over matter.
“You just have to pull the trigger and hope for the best.” Remarkably, the dedicated enthusiast trains himself.
On weekends when other teenagers are be out playing, Sherrington is on the range shooting targets.
“I do it for about six to eight hours a week, sometimes nine,” he said.
Being only four when he was first taught by his grandfather to use an air rifle, the young sporting achiever’s dream has grown, with the goal to one day represent Australia.
“I just want to be a good shooter, maybe go to the Olympics,” he said.
Now he has the chance to prove himself in the State Championships where he will confidently enter three events and compete against five other juniors.
“I’ve done it before, it’s nothing new,” he said.
Sherrington’s love of the sport began at a young age but his dedication since sets him apart from most.
The love and skill for the sport has been passed down through the generations, and he is keen to continue competing in the sport others tend to neglect.
“I’m probably the only kid in school who has a couple of guns sitting in his room,” he said.
But Sherrington finds himself defending the sport he loves.
“It’s just overlooked. People think that all guns are bad but they don’t really get it and if they gave it a go they’d probably find they like it.”
