A hunter reward program is contributing to the Government’s integrated approach to fox control.
FoxStop is gaining members while reducing the impact foxes have on livestock and wildlife.
The 850 registered members of the Field and Game Association and the Sporting Shooters ‘ Association Australia have helped to control about 3200 foxes since the program started earlier this year.
Now a new 4WD vehicle will be awarded to the hunter who helps contribute most to the Victorian fox control effort and there will also be a monthly prize draw.
Since the start of the Government’s Future Farming Strategy, $400,000 has been dedicated to support the FoxStop program over four years.
Agriculture Minister Joe Helper said the best way to control foxes was by enlisting neighbouring landholders. using bait followed by den fumigation and getting involved with and supporting FoxStop.
The Shooters’ Association Hunting & Conservation manager, Collin Wood, said that to control the fox problem, there needed to be a community response. “The SSAA and FGA as responsible hunting organisations value the opportunity play our part and participate in this program which has wide-ranging benefits to rural and regional communities,” Mr Wood said.
