Doors open on hidden heritage
The Mercury, Thursday, May 28, 2009
The underground passages of Bellerive’s Kangaroo Bluff Battery will be open to citizen explorers during Heritage Tasmania’s Open Doors program.
Ten of the state’s best kept heritage secrets will be opened up for free tours this weekend.
Environment, Parks, Heritage and the Arts Minister Michaell O’Byrne launched Open Doors at Kangaroo Bluff Battery yesterday, accompanied by members of SSAA’s Militaria Collectors Tasmania in full regalia.
“It’s a fascinating site for this year’s program. The public will have the opportunity to explore the passages that are normally locked,” Ms O’Byrne said.
Completed in 1884, the battery was developed to stop any enemy vessels from shelling Hobart Town.
On Sunday, visitors will be able to see the moat and cannons, talk to Parks and Wildlife Service staff and look through underground tunnels open to the public for the first time.
Other events are a behind-the-scenes look at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, two walks on Mt Wellington exploring the historic water supply system, and a walk around Sullivans Cove and Hobart Rivulet.
Other places open include the historic Hill St Reservoir in West Hobart, the old Carlton Post Office at Carlton River, SS Cartela at Brooke St Pier in Hobart, the Lisdillon Saltworks on the East Coast, and the Customs House and Bond Store at Strahan.
Sites are open on Saturday and/or Sunday.
