Christine Nieman (Letters, 11/5), calm your imagination and take heart that Victoria’s sporting shooters are checked and regulated to the minutest level. I am under more scrutiny from the police as a shooter than I am as a health-care professional caring for children and the infirm. Hunters are just regular members of the community; they are not the bogey men that animal rights activists and gun control zealots would have you believe. The “combat gear” quote suggests that you are letting media hyperbole get the better of you. Camouflage is designed for concealment, not to feed some Rambo fantasy.
Gun crime is committed by criminals, not law-abiding hunters, so stress less, the hunters are no threat to you.
Hunters also strive to protect the animals they hunt; the last thing we want is extinction.
Hunting is a natural process.
Whether it is a fox or a human predator is irrelevant; some animals are destined to become food. It’s just that some of us prefer to collect it for ourselves, rather than let Safeway do it.
