Five talented local sportspeople will share $4000 under the 2009 NSW Country Athletes Scheme that will help them receive first-class training and coaching.
“The Country Athletes Scheme will help James Weller from NSW Karate Federation, Josh Andrew from Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW), Chase O ‘Leary of Surfing NSW, James Magnussen of Swimming NSW Limited and Jason Taylor of Tennis NSW achieve the standard of training and coaching they need to continue to impress at competition level in their chosen sports,” Independent Member for Port Macquarie Peter Besseling said.
“Each athlete will receive $800, which should help lessen the burden of travel and competition costs.
“The Country Athletes Scheme helps talented teenage athletes in country NSW to access training, coaching and competitions similar to those enjoyed by athletes from the city.” Besseling said the success of five athletes from Port Macquarie, Herons Creek and Lake Cathie should encourage other youngsters in the community to apply for funding.
Athletes must be 17 years of age or under, be competing at state-age level in their sport, and be registered, affiliated or have reciprocal rights with the recognised state body for the sport in New South Wales.
Applications open on September30 and close on December 31.
Meanwhile, another $1250 has been granted to two Port Macquarie coaches under the 2009 NSW Country Coaches and Officials Travel Scheme.
“Kern Brill of Indoor Sports NSW will receive $700 and Jeffery Polverino of Surf Life Saving NSW will get $550 thanks to a program that helps coaches and officials in regional areas take part in education courses to gain or maintain accreditation,” Besseling said.
