John Cook made it 11 state championship victories when he won the custom rimfire hunter class at the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (Queensland) Championships at the Risdon Range on Saturday.
Cook shot 497.07 to win from fellow Queensland shooters Les Flood and Roy McCarthy. Gladstone competitor Gaye Truscott was fourth in her first competition at Warwick.
Cook, who hails from Stanthorpe, is a member of the Warwick club and in the best form of his career.
He won light rimfire and two-gun titles at the nationals at Belmont Range in Brisbane at Easter to take his tally of national titles to three wins and one second.
Cook said the Warwick branch was really going forward with extensions to the clubhouse, a new amenities block and training facilities.
While Cook won overall in custom rimfire hunter class over 50 and 100 yard distances, former Warwick resident Kevin Carruthers flew from Cairns to win a gold medal at 50 yards with a score of 250.15.
Carruthers was one of four members who travelled from Cairns, two by plane and two by car.
“We (and wife Ellen) caught the shooting for accuracy bug 18 months ago,” Carruthers said.
Warwick SSAA member Greg Rossiter was second to Carruthers with a score of 250.14, an outstanding effort in a field of 40.
Truscott works for Queensland Transport at Gladstone and said getting away for a weekend of SSAA shooting was a great break from work.
“We have come down for shoots in Brisbane and Millmerran before, it is a bit colder in Warwick than at home,” Truscott said.
Branch officer Steven Kasper said the competition had been pretty good.
“We have 28 shooters for the final event today,” he said.
