Tenacity is the key to success, according to elite markswoman Annie Elliott.
The nationally acclaimed rifle shooter is one of just four women entered in the Queensland’s Under Class Championships at Risdon’s rifle range this weekend.
Hosted by the Warwick branch of the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia the four-day competition is the first to include both the rimfire and centre-fire disciplines and has attracted entrants from throughout the nation.
For Brisbane-based Elliott, who is amongst a select few whose success has earnt them a place in the sport’s prestigious hall of fame, it is a chance to mix it with the best.
“Shooting is really about competing against yourself and bettering your own performances,” she explained.
“But it is always nice to come to a popular range like Risdon and shoot against some of the country’s finest.” Elliott said the odds were in her genders’ favour this weekend, with women representing 10 percent of the competition.
“It’s a better ratio than normal, but the truth is women excel at this sport, their tenacity and focus set them apart,” she said.
More than 40 shooters from as far a field as Cairns and Canberra have converged on the range for this weekend’s State championships.
Local organiser Steve Kasper said the competition standard had already proved exceptional with the toughest rounds likely to come today and tomorrow.
“This is the biggest event we’ve ever hosted and we’re optimistic it will be a success.”
