Letter - Greens should be realistic about shooting feral animals

Sydney Morning Herald, Page: 10. Friday, 1 May, 2009

The hypocrisy of the Greens over conservation hunting is breathtaking (“Greens open fire on Game Council”, April 27).
I note Lee Rhiannon is not calling for the closure of the State Emergency Service or Rural Fire Service, which are similarly funded by government, and similarly structured on the use of volunteers. Yet she attacks the work of volunteer hunters, who have removed more than 22,000 feral pests from state forests, not to mention hundreds of thousands every year on agricultural land.
Ms Rhiannon conveniently forgets the hundreds of millions of dollars the Government puts towards managing national parks each year, including millions on feral animal control.
Surely it is time the highly effective volunteer-hunter model was expanded to include national parks.
Ms Rhiannon’s objections to the use of volunteer hunters seems to be related more to the extreme-left ideology of the Greens than an objective assessment of the conservation and economic benefits of using volunteer hunters.
