More on NT crocodile safari proposals

ABC Darwin (Darwin), Late Breakfast, 09/04/2009 08:31am

Interview with Michaela Johnson, co director of an Aboriginal corporation, putting forward a proposal to begin a 12-month safari hunting trial. Compere Julia Christensen says a leaked draft of the government crocodile management report shows the government plans to extend the crocodile watch zone around Darwin to 50km and employ a catch or kill approach, as well as crocodile safari hunting.
Johnson discusses her group’s proposal, saying it is a joint partnership between David Gulpilil, Jyda Gulpilil and Gulpilil clan and crocodile hunter Mick Pitman and explains why the plan needs Federal Government approval. Johnson has met with Alison Anderson, NT Minister for Parks and Wildlife, and says she has been supportive of comments made at the meeting and that she understands the importance of the traditional people playing a part in the idea. Johnson says that Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett is currently not in Australia, so she is waiting for a reply. Johnson explains what the definition of a problem crocodile is and how they should be removed or put up for game hunting. Johnson discusses the partnership with Pitman saying they will be able to create as much income as possible.
