Shooters take aim for national titles

Forty shooters from across Australia will travel to Townsville this weekend for the National Muzzleloading Championships.
The competition will be held from April10 to 13 at the Herveys Range Shooting Complex and is run by the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia.
SSAA Townsville Branch Muzzleloading captain Des Prowse said the event was filled with romance and intrigue with the historic weapons.
“The firearms that we use are old-style firearms, muzzleloading rifles, handguns and shotguns which use black powder, as opposed to modern smokeless powder,” Prowse said.
“Most people would know these forms of firearms from such people as Davy Crockett, Daniel Boon and any of those movies like The Patriot.” Across the weekend, the card includes 29 events, consisting of nine handgun (pistol and revolver) events, 18 long-arm (rifle and musket) events, and two shotgun (percussion and firelock) events.
The national titles have not been held in Townsville for 10 years.
Prowse said he, like some of the other entrants, would shoot in every event on the card.
He will also defend his Military Rifle Aggregate title from last year’s nationals.
“I enjoy antiques and I enjoyed competitive firearm shooting so I suppose I married the two together by going into muzzleloading shooting,” he said.
Spectators are welcome to watch the competition.
