Sunrise program speaks about potential NT crocodile cull

Channel 7 (Sydney), Sunrise, 03/04/2009 08:09am

The hosts recall a tragic incident last month, noting the family of 11-year-old Briony O’Sullivan, who was taken by a crocodile, want a cull of the animals with a 100km radius of Darwin to become croc free.
The hosts interview crocodile expert Professor Grahame Webb from Crocodilus Park who says he is not in favour of a 100km radius, although he sympathises with the idea that more needs to be done around Darwin. Webb feels the government will look at the situation further. Asked about the crocodile population, Webb notes the population has built up since protection and in 1979/80 a program was started to remove them from some areas. Webb notes the benefits of crocodiles in some areas and argues issues such as crocodile removal and education of people will be looked at by government.
Koch reports the NT News has scary photos of people in a crocodile-infested river and he asks if people are being slack. Webb recalls education measures for children in the 1980s and he wonders about the extent to which the program is continued today.
Webb says people who live in the north must learn about crocodiles and the Mary River probably has the densest crocodile population in the world. Koch thanks the professor.
