The Nhill Branch of the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia held its first fox shoot for the year in the Netherby-Lorquon area on Saturday.
A good turn out of approximately 30 members gathered at the Lorquon fire shed to begin the shoot.
Organiser of the day Len Twig said that “Although we only managed to shoot seven foxes, all of which were youngsters, it was a good day.”
Len attributes the low numbers of foxes sighted as a result of the drought and dry conditions.
This shoot being the first of the season has significant meaning for SSAS members, as it is the R Meyer Trophy Shoot, the trophy was awarded to Collin Hoffrichter.
This memorial trophy shoot is now in its third year and is awarded to the person who shoots the first fox on the first hunt of the season.
“Mr Meyer was a well respected member and shoot master for many years of the Sporting Shooters’ Association and a leading light within the club,” commented Len Twig.
Other highlights of the days shoot was the attendance of keen junior shooters who were mentored by senior shooters.
Junior shooter Aiden Drendel scored a first and a last in shooting his first fox on an official shoot and which was also the last fox of the day to be shot.
The club also trialled the wearing of orange vests as an added safety precaution and this went down well with shooters.
The first meeting 2009 will be held on the 16th April meeting at the SSAA Kaniva Gun Club rooms at 7.30pm.
The next fox shoot is to be held this coming weekend starting at Terry Millers Wool Shed Yanac starting at 8.30am. Terry Miller is the hunt coordinator.
The club is also having an evening rabbit shoot on Saturday the 16th May at 8.00pm. Please contact Wayne Donnell.
