It was a full house at the Coolamatong Range Rimfire Hunter Class Benchrest shoot last Sunday. Paul Schmitzer, president of the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia (SSAA) Snowy River Branch was delighted with the turn out.
All fifteen bench rests were occupied and there were shooters lined up waiting for a shoot”, he said.
“It was also good to see new members attending and enjoying themselves,” he added.
The Snowy River Branch is a well run club and the facilities are excellent. Some shooters even drove from Canberra and Bombala to take part.
Locals are urged to take advantage of the opportunities available and are always made welcomed.
“You’ll find club members very sociable and friendly. It’s a great way to spend a Sunday morning too,” Paul said.
Never fired a rifle before? Don’t own a rifle? Don’t hold a shooters licence? New regulations now mean that supervised try-outs and training can be arranged.

Results of the Rimfire Open Benchrest, March 22, 2009. A 40-round match. Twenty rounds at 50m and 20 rounds at 100m. A total score of 400 achievable, plus bullseyes. Fourteen members started, but due to strong gusty winds, seven decided to retire and not shoot the 100m section. There were testing times for the seven who continued with changes in wind direction putting most to their limit with zeroing the bullseye.
First place went to David Deutschbein with a score of 368.7 Equal second place went to Ron Chaplin and Chris Swain with a score of 345.1. Third place went to John Wearne with a score of 299.1. The targets have a centre dot, which David hit seven times during the match. Well done David, the others hit this once during the match.
Special thanks to Ron Chaplin, who traveled from Bombala to attend the shoot and had great success.
The next shoot is a Centrefire BR3C to be held March 30, starting 9am.
New shooters and visitors are welcome; please call Paul Schmitzer or Chris Swain for any information. Paul Schmitzer (President) 02 6452 5483 and Chris Swain (Secretary) 02 6452 7767.
