Rabbits have done millions of dollars worth of damage

ABC North & West SA (Port Pirie), Morning Show, 19/03/2009 09:10am

Compere Kieran Weir says that since rabbits were released into the wild in the 19th century, they have caused so much devastation to our national landscape. The cost is in the millions for the damage that they do. He says his next guest has been working in rabbit control for more than three decades. Dr Brian Cooke says that he was involved in some of the early work to try and understand why rabbits were getting over myxomotosis. He says they developed genetic resistance to the disease. Weir says Cooke has also been involved in projects with the CSIRO. Cooke talks about forging partnerships across scientific communities to address feral pest problems in Australia. He talks about the origins of these viruses; myxomotosis and calicivirus.
Interviewee: Dr Brian Cooke, University of Canberra.
