A firearms amnesty will run until May31 to give people with unregistered firearms a chance to hand them in at any police station, with no questions asked.
Police Minister, Tony Kelly said that the government was asking people to think about whether they really need their firearms any more or whether they want firearms in their home in the future.
And if they don’t, we’re giving them an easy, free way to get rid of them,” Mr Kelly said.
The NSW Firearms Registry will also be writing to more than 160,000 firearms licence holders reminding them of their safe storage responsibilities under the current legislation.
Under the amnesty: People who are not licensed to own firearms but currently have unregistered firearms in their possession, will be able to surrender them to any police station without penalty People who currently have a licence or permit, but have unregistered firearms in their possession will be able to register those firearms without penalty.
Kelly said that the NSW Police would begin audit checks to make sure licensed gun owners’ storage facilities comply with safety requirements after the amnesty ends on May 31.
Anyone with concerns about unlicensed firearms is encouraged to call the Firearms Registry on 1300 362 562.
