Steven Kasper expects the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (SSAA) Warwick branch will host its biggest shoot on April 30-May 4.
The branch secretary said Warwick was the first branch in Queensland to host both rimfire and centrefire championships at the same venue in the State Hunter Class Championships.
“We have 34 nominations so far from Queensland and New South Wales shooters and expect 80,” Kasper said.
Branch president Mal Smith said Warwick’s population would be boosted by 150 for the weekend.
“A lot have already booked motel accommodation. The shoot will bring a lot of money into the local community,” Smith said.
Three of the early nominations are SSAA Benchrest Hall of Fame members Annie and Stuart Elliott and Phil Jones.
Induction into the hall of fame is based on national success so there is no doubt some of the best shooters in the nation will be in Warwick for the state championships.
The 34 shooters who have nominated so far are in a total of 110 events during the four days of championship shooting.
The first day, April 30, has been set aside for practice.
Each shooter can compete in up to five events and already two shooters from Gladstone have nominated for five events between them.
The next major SSAA shoot at Risdon Range is an international rimfire benchrest shoot on March 28 in which competitors shoot three times at each of 25 bullseyes. They receive a score out of 750. The event is a new discipline for SSAA branches.
Greg Roulston and David Abood are two of the improving shooters in the Warwick club, each with the ability to win medals in the State Hunter Class Championships.
