ABC Perth discusses fox fur debate

ABC 720 Perth (Perth), Mornings, 16/03/2009 11:36am

Compere Geoff Hutchison says it was not long ago when Australia was exporting hundreds and thousands of fox pelts each year. Hutchison mentions that now, the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia (SSAA) wants to reignite the industry. Matthew Godson, spokesperson, SSAA, joins the program to discuss this issue. Godson says Australia, at its peak, used to export about 800,000 fox furs overseas annually. Hutchison says fur will be the main reason why the industry dropped. Godson says they are conservation hunters in the Association and they see this as a mechanism to get down the fox population. Godson says New Zealand is a classic example where this is done. He adds that the Department of Conservation in New Zealand promotes and support eco-fur. The fur is used to create jackets and cushions. Godson says foxes are controlled all the time. He says for the public to accept fox fur they need to understand they are ensuring a human supply chain.
