Promote and support fox fur alterative
ABC North & West SA (Port Pirie), SA Country Hour, 13/03/2009 12:53pm
Are you a farmer who is having problems with foxes and wanting another form of income? Well, maybe next time you’re out trying to get rid of the pests, think about selling pelts to a fur wholesaler. That is the advice from the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia (SSAA). Matthew Godson says it would be a benefit to the environment as well. He says in New Zealand they have quite an industry going, having possum fur throws and cushions. He says this is being promoted and supported by the New Zealand Department of Conservation and also encouraged by many conservation groups including the WWF. Although Godson believes this could be a good earner for farmers, the RSPCA doesn’t agree. McKay says recreational shooting of foxes in the past hasn’t stopped them from being pest.
