Feral pigs requires several control methods
ABC Tropical North (Mackay), Rural Report, 10/03/2009 06:23am
Interview with Michael Tuckett, pest manager, Mackay Regional Council, about the problems of feral pigs, which can do serious damage to agricultural and cane crops. Tuckett says people need to use a combination of methods to control the animals, which includes the use of helicopters, baiting, dogs and shooting. He says they want to coordinate peoples’ responses to get a better result. There is funding support for traps. Baiting comes under the Lands Protection Pest and Stock Route Management Act 2002. Tuckett says some people must go through the council to use 1080 and set up a program, but cannot use older chemicals. He says any animals killed have to be humanely destroyed.
