Dr Maxine Cooper on ACT kangaroo culling

2CC (Canberra), Breakfast, 06/03/2009 08:43am

The Canberra Times this morning is reporting that Dr Maxine Cooper, ACT Commissioner for Sustainability & the Environment, wants kangaroos in the ACT culled, as the growing population is inhibiting the growth of threatened grasslands. Compere Mike Jeffreys speaks with Cooper about her views. She has not yet read the article. Jeffreys reads extracts. Essentially, it says that kangaroo management is a reality of living in the bush. No-one wants to do anything about kangaroo populations because of a major controversy two years ago involving the ADF and animal rights activists. Jeffreys agrees with Cooper - we have to take responsibility in managing kangaroo numbers. Animal rights activists can’t see the big picture. If we don’t cull kangaroos, they will either starve, be hit by cars or destroy the environment. Cooper says kangaroo culling wouldn’t be a big issue in any other place in rural Australia.
