SA: Guns surrendered in SA amnesty

AAP Newswire, Wednesday, 4 March, 2009.

More than 1100 firearms have been handed to police in South Australia during a three-month amnesty.
Handguns, pump-action rifles and self-loading shotguns were among the gun haul.
Police Minister Michael Wright said on Wednesday that it was an encouraging result, taking many disused, unwanted and often illegal guns off the streets.
“This has significantly reduced the number of weapons in the community and consequently diminished the opportunity for them to fall into the wrong hands,” Mr Wright said.
The amnesty began on December 1 last year and ended on February 28 with 1144 firearms surrendered to police.
A similar amnesty in 2006 resulted in 1,490 firearms being surrendered.
