NSW gun amnesty starts
Sun Herald, Page: 26. Sunday, 1 March, 2009.
Illegal guns and pistols can be handed in to police stations from today with no questions asked as a three-month firearms amnesty kicks off.
The Police Minister, Tony Kelly, urged people with firearms to think about whether they still needed or wanted them.
“If they don’t, we’re giving them an easy, free way to get rid of them dropping them off anonymously at any police station.”
The NSW Firearms Registry will also be writing to more than 160,000 firearms licence holders reminding them of their safe storage responsibilities.
After the amnesty ends on May 31, police will check licensed gun owners’ storage facilities.
