Great Western Woodlands Campaign
ABC Goldfields WA (Perth), Morning, 10/02/2009 11:20am
Interview with Dr Alexander Watson, Spokesman, Great Western Woodlands Campaign, Wilderness Society; about the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Urban LandCare Group holding an information session with himself and Keith Bradby, CEO, Gondwana Link, to spread the word about the Great Western Woodlands. Dr Watson says the nature is so amazing because it’s the largest temperate woodland left on earth. Dr Watson says climate change is drying out the woodlands and increasing the length of summer; which has resulted in an increase in bushfires. Dr Watson says feral animals are also a problem and he says there’s ‘very very little money’ from Government in managing these threats. Dr Watson says the Liberals would spend money managing the area, but it hasn’t been clearly defined as to how this would happen. Dr Watson says the point of tonight’s session is to discuss how the Great Western Woodlands fits in the with the Kalgoorlie area. Dr Watson says there are a whole range of stakeholders; and says the mining industry are very important. Dr Watson says conversations they’re having with the mining industry are ‘extremely positive.’ Dr Watson says there needs to be increased attention on fire management.
