Gun owners have been urged to take more care securing their weapons after an increase in firearm theft.
The Australian Institute of Criminology made the call after releasing its annual report which showed 1526 guns were stolen in 2006-07, an increase of 81 from the previous year.
Rifles and shotguns were the most commonly stolen firearms, making up 82 per cent of all thefts.
Handguns represented just 7 per cent of all stolen guns.
