Aerial wallaby culling at the Tindal Airstrip

ABC Darwin (Darwin), Breakfast, 03/12/2008 08:45am

Interview with Mike Kelly, Parliamentary Secretary for Defence, about his order for Defence to cull wallabies at the Tindal Airstrip. Kelly says Pearl Aviation’s safety concerns are reasonable and he is concerned that there should have been more close negotiations earlier. Kelly says it is ‘completely unacceptable’ that the Katherine region has been without aeromedical service when the risk caused by wallabies can be managed. Kelly says the new fence is due to be completed by April 2009 and combined with the planned culling program, Pearl Aviation should be able to resume services soon. Kelly says he wants to promote communication between Defence bases and nearby civil communities. Kelly says the culling will be performed in accordance with the National Code of Practice for the Humane Shooting of Kangaroos and Wallabies for Non-Commercial Purposes.
